Life in Slow Motion

November 27, 2007

Have you ever felt like things were happening, but the rate at which they occur seems to be somewhat forced? What I mean when I say forced is things which happen with ease are pretty much done by the time you start, yet everything else seems to drag on and on… Maybe it is my current melancholy or my sleep deprivation but I find these past few days are taking forever to finish.

On another note I am slightly obsessed with a new online show called ‘quarterlife’. I only started watching it today but I find it very intriguing and I caught myself engrossed in it wondering “Why doesn’t she just shut up?” Anyway, click here to see what I’m talking about.

By the way, my birthday fairly SUCKED this year, however I must thank one of my dearest friends for the lovely dinner and the surprised birthday greeting from the staff. Champers was great, thanks MiMi^_^

Aqua Del Mar: the Review

November 20, 2007

I know it’s late in coming and for that I apologise. However, I am now prepared to give you a run down of the happenings at Aqua Del Mar- the new club night in Barbados.

aqualogo.jpg

Aqua Del Mar sets itself apart from the local party scene and night life because of not only its format but its location. Set in the beautiful decor of Aqua Restaurant and Lounge, it uses the reputation of this fine establishment to give the event some class as well as recognition.

aquaaquaimage1.jpg

However, do not be quick to jump to the conclusion the event simply rests on the laurels of all that Aqua has aspired to, on the contrary, Sector 6 headed by DJ Carlos adds not takes away from the establishment and in culmination, turns it into a night that’s simply unforgettable.

barimg1.jpg

When I got there I was filled with a sense of anxious anticipation and excitement because I am familiar with the type of music that DJ Carlos is known for and I was anticipating that, however as far as turnout was concerned I was a bit disheartened by the OPA! days when few people showed up apart from the group I went with. Sector 6 is amazing however I sometimes think they’re overshadowed by the locations they choose.

sector-6.jpg

Having arrived there at 7:45 for a 7:30 start, I was met by staff and I believe one or two patrons who were even earlier than I was. I surveyed the downstairs and noticed all but three small tables were removed and a dance-floor was created by the vacant space, at the other end the DJ and Lighting booths with Light Pad behind the DJ. I thought, “Impressive, they went all out” and showed you don’t need a CLUB to have a Club Night.

Meanwhile, I was starving because on Sundays I usually eat at 12 then go out for a bite to eat later in the evening. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw the Aqua Del Mar menu! It wasn’t the full Aqua menu, which would make no sense seeing as how it’s a club night. Not to say the menu had on fries, far from. It had real food, but club food. I had a Spicy Chicken Quesadilla which was the BEST one I ever had, no lie. After I ate, I went upstairs to take a look around and upstairs was even better than downstairs. Lounge furniture, menus, a small bar… everything to give you a relaxed feel. What I liked most about it was the fact that the speakers were downstairs so if you wanted to sit and chat you could, without having to leave the establishment, yet you could still enjoy the music because of the open air setting.

The night progressed and more people started showing up. By this time my liquors were up and I was already a tad tipsy. The only down-point of the night was the fact that they didn’t have a cappuccino machine. Apart from that, I have no complaints. I went to get some coffee from Italia which is like 2 minutes walk away so it wasn’t a problem for me especially considering they give you bands so you won’t have to worry about getting stopped on the way back in to pay again. When I got back, I decided to try some dessert and had the Spiced Banana Spring Rolls with Caramel Coulis- one word, Amazing. Good food: Check!

The music was simply excellent and DJ Carlos played an amazing session. He really got the groove up and the people who now filled the place got their groove on, myself included. Although most of the music was new to me, it was such a good vibe you couldn’t HELP but dance to it especially after a few Absolut and cranberry juice! Good music: Check!

This was one of the best nights I had without my posse to MAKE me enjoy myself. I was impressed, not only by the decor but by the music and the crowd. I think anyone coming to Barbados who especially loves Dance music as well as good food and an ocean front setting should DEFINITELY check out Aqua Del Mar. Need directions? I got your back.

direct.jpg

The only request I have, Carlos, throw in a couple Top 40 Remixes, for those who are now getting into the club/dance/trance/techno circuit. It’s a soft landing I find.

Jamaica: Guns, Votes and Money

November 15, 2007

This was a shocking piece of media that crossed the desk here and I felt compelled to share it with everyone.

Not many of you may know my stance on violence especially as it relates to Jamaica, but I think serious action needs to be taken. Sadly, I cannot say WHAT that action may be as every step I think of leads to greater complications and does not always work out to be feasible.

I bring to you, part 1. Click here.

Microsoft Windows Vista Downgrades to XP

November 15, 2007

If this isn’t the most awesome development in computer technology, I don’t know what is. Imagine getting an iPhone for Christmas then having to downgrade to a phone booth because it simply didn’t work. That’s the case for many users of Windows Vista. Let’s be honest, XP may have had its flaws…. okay so maybe that was the extent of my defense for it. All the talk, at LEAST it worked, however, the wonderful people at Microsoft developed a new Operating System which they marketed basically as being “the bestest OS like, EVER… and you want it cuz we took out the Start button and replaced it with a Windows symbol which is like way prettier!”

Right…

In the meantime, you can’t use such cumbersome things that you already possessed such as printers, scanners, faxes, wireless cards what have you but you know what, they were last season ANYWAY. Time to get new stuff! YAY! At least for new users they offer the option of getting a Windows XP ‘downgrade’… unfortunately it sorta only applies to certain versions of Vista.

Allow me to make a couple suggestions:

1. For those of you still within warranty I recommend a large magnet gently run down the outside by the hard drive, so as not to break the seal.

2. For those without a valid warranty and a few coppers to spare, that LOVELY little option called Format should rectify the problem. *Note- back up your info and purchase a GENUINE copy of Windows XP to install.*

3. Get a Mac.

Meanwhile, I am using Windows 2000. Anyone wanna buy me a Mac?

Youtube is Golden

November 14, 2007

Ah, ’tis the Youtube generation and aren’t we all reveling in it? I mean where else can you upload videos of yourself and become celebrities or see your favourite music videos that no longer show on MTV or VH1, and news, sports, comedy, etc. and be widely seen besides Youtube? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind (lol broke off into song there just now). Anyway, you HAVE to check out this video from the young Tina EC. I found it at first vexing, but I grew to love it as I am sure you will also:) Click here to see it, which you simply MUST.

Late Breaking Stale News

November 13, 2007

I am so sorry I was unable to see this earlier, however, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. I find the person behind this to be egregious but in its classifcal definition- ‘separate from the flock’. Click here to see what has me so titillated

iPhone vs. Voyager

November 13, 2007

Now I don’t know who besides me is slightly obsessed with cellular technology and cell phones in general, however it appears as though the reason for Apple releasing the officially unlocked iPhone and getting them onto the market earlier than anticipated may NOT be due to them being the most wonderful people EVER!

It comes due to the fact that whenever technology is created that goes a step further than previous devices did, it takes a while, but that technology is replicated, usually in a year’s time. It would appear though that the wonderful people at LG have learned a trick or two in a relatively short space of time and are bringing out their new fangled phone which DOES look like something out of Star Trek and rightfully, they’re calling it Voyager. Click here to get a look at the phone which is not yet available in Zone 1. Something tells me it’ll come out somewhere around the time when iPhones are up for grabs. This could be the phone that did for Verizon what the iPhone did for AT&T.

Hmmm… maybe I should change the type of phone I want for my birthday

Another Blog from the Past

November 11, 2007

Last Academic year I ended up doing a course I didn’t want to do. I guess I didn’t take it too well. Read and see what I mean:
So, guess what. I have to do a few more courses before my degree at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus is complete. Great. One of those courses, however, is History of West Indies Cricket Since 1870. Now, the significance of that is as follows:

1. I hate cricket.
There is no middle ground for this. I despise the damned game, it makes me physically ill. When the test matches used to be televised on tv replacing shows I waited all week to watch, I felt not only betrayed, but weakened, like Superman and Kryptonite, is Yours Truly and Cricket.

2. I dislike Hilary Beckles
The connection: he championed this course and developed it to be added to the course list of Level III (Final Year) History. Now, from previous posts you may discover I am not a fan of this individual so anything he pioneered I tend to shy away from, but now I have no choice.

3. The lecturer
“God bless David!” As my fore-citizens would say. I can’t believe they found one of if not THE most boring History lecturers to teach the course. It is like they planned how to get me from the beginning, the bitches.

What does all this have to do with my title you might ask, well I’ll tell you! I was planning a little trip, an excursion if you will, to the North of the island. I would be wearing my finery, annointed in my favourite cologne, walk with the iPod nano and fling myself off North Point and hopefully either bash in my head on a rock and die instantly, or *SPLOOSH* into the ocean and have the water fill my lungs and die instantly. Whatever happens, I was just hoping not to land in a rogue sand dune and cushion my blow, for climbing back up to try again would ruin the poetry of it all!

Anyway, the sun has set so the mood has passed. I live to moan another day.
Sigh,
Superlative1

Review of Blackout by Britney Spears: 2007/11/10

November 10, 2007

Well for those of you who are now joining in on the action, I recently became a wordpress blogger, moving my original blog here and I’ve got to tell you, I’m lovin’ it!

Also, I have been checking out Britney Spears comeback album Blackout, one of the most anticipated (in good ways and bad) albums, possibly within the past decade. It’s a pretty solid album, surprisingly so given her tumultuous year and the goings on in her life. To be perfectly honest I was expecting something a little more… watery. Over processed bubblegum pop without lyrical depth and over the top production. Happily I can report my expectations were disappointed.
The debut single Gimme More happens to be one of the least exciting tracks on the album and although it did relatively well on the charts and it IS a nice song to dance to, don’t underestimate the album as a result of it.
Piece of Me set to be the next single from the album speaks to her media blitz and attention and while unlike certain other artists who whine and moan about when they mess up, she simply points out her life and puts some perspective on the whole situation.
While Radar will win no Grammy for Song of the Year, it is a strong club/pop song sure to get you dancing and the beat is crazy enough to be infectious.
One of my personal favourites Break The Ice brings Britney back to her place as Pop Princess utilizing her undeniably unique voice for which this type of music actually works. It has in all the sound effects of vintage Britney while assuring its fresh sound with instruments not usually heard in pop.
Heaven on Earth has this old club feel from back in the day when it was all about the music. It just feels like a song to dance along to or just bop your head from side to side joyously as you sit in your car or seat in the library, wherever you may find yourself.
The most shocking title coming out of the album was Get Naked (I Got A Plan) and I raised an eyebrow when I saw it and thought it was going to be a porn song done to a ballad a la Touch Of My Hand however, it’s another mid-up tempo song to dance to, or… whatever else to:).
Freakshow is daring in the manner in which it was produced and the way her voice is filtered in the first verse, it works though, and at least it’s out there in one of my favourite lines “Me and my girls like to get it on, grab us a couple boys to go” which is sexy yet not obscene.
Toy Soldier is one of those fillers that really don’t give the album weight, however as far as fillers go, it could have been a LOT worse. I hear some singles which are worse than Britney’s fillers.
My LEAST favourite song on the album is Hot As Ice which as one of my friends describes sounds like it was done by Britney Spears featuring the Oompa Loompas However, it grows on you like a fungus. I just think her voice grated across my inner ear a bit in that song.
Ooh Ooh Baby is yet another filler which adds nothing to the album but track numbers, however it still sounds cool, not single material, so of course I expect to see a music video for it soon. It seems songs which really shouldn’t be singles are chosen all the time.
*Breaks into song* “You’re the perfect lover I’m in love with all the things you do so seductive when you touch me I can’t get enough of you.” I should really find that song Perfect Lover dull but somehow it penetrated my core and filled my brain with its lyrics lol.
Finally, the song which I think was a brilliant decision to have as the final song is Why Should I Be Sad which speaks to her relationship (obviously with Kevin Federline) and actually givers her side of the story. Why I like the fact this song comes at the end is because my view on albums is that the last song SHOULD sound like the end of the album, it doesn’t have to say “Thank you for buying my cd, I really hope you enjoyed me” but it should feel as though the chapter is closing. Why Should I Be Sad does that for me, and it really made the album sound complete. Great production thanks to the likes of Danja Hands, Pharrell Williams and Jonathan Rotem, this album will certainly be a PushPlay album. All in all, I give Blackout a surprising 4.5 Stars out of 5.

Young Hollywood

November 10, 2007

Here’s a piece I found today that I wrote a couple years ago. It was supposed to begin a chapter in a book which was supposed to be written by multiple authors from different perspectives. Unfortunately we all had lives that year so it never got off the ground Hmmm… I wonder what they’re up to this year…

“Society, fuelled by “Young Hollywood” has instilled in us its misconception of beauty. In doing so, we now have elevated a generation of hungry, underweight youngsters, surviving on alcohol, sex, cigarettes, protein shakes and trips to the gym. These drivers of consumerism in its highest form have shown us the beauty of money and conveniently overlooked the struggle acquiring such funding may entail.”

The reason I say this, is because of my constant viewing of E!, the entertainment channel, or so it would like to market itself as being. I must admit I actually LOVE to watch E! though it is inept in its content given the all encompassing name it bears. It tends to focus mainly on this “Young Hollywood” explosion, which spans from California to New York. Hollywood indeed… but I digress. The amount of cartilage, bones and ribs would be enough to drive a dog pound wild with excitement at a little treat (emphasis on little.)

Sometimes I just want to fly down to “Young Hollywood” and one by one, hold them, shake them and scream, “Eat! Drink! Be Merry!” better yet to stay away from the religious undertone, “Eat! Drink! Be Chubby!” People would then jump to the conclusion that I am a 300lb bitter individual on some crusade to win people over to the chubberts side of life. I will admit I am a bit hefty, but I am proud to proclaim that I am not a walking skeletal exhibit for a high school anatomy class!

My major issue is that these girls are starving themselves to fit into a size -3 dress or jeans, I swear! Grazing upon nothing more than a tuft of grass, and heading to clubs to guzzle drinks and cigarettes to stave off hunger. Though a successful diet plan in terms of losing body mass and from keeping it at bay, it isn’t healthy. You can’t even say they’re beating fat back with a stick, because one may be confused as to which was the stick and which were they!

It’s not only the girls mind you. The rakey guys are a sight as well. No musculature to speak of, they are regarded as sexy! These gender neutral men with their curled, flipped, dyed and tossed tresses seem to be in competition with their female counterparts to see who can weigh the least- forgetting that men have denser muscles and bones, apparently these guys are simply dense. Sometimes I wonder if people feel proud to stand on a scale and have the dial spin listlessly to a figure sheepishly pawing at a hundred.
