Ultraviolence – Lana Del Rey Gets It Right

June 19, 2014

I’ve always been a fan of Lana Del Rey, from the first time I happened across her song Video Games while listening to the UK top 100 (don’t ask). I needed to know who this vintage siren was who understood my nostalgia towards life gone by while remaining fully present, in the present.

When I got Born To Die and I listened to it from start to finish I said “This is the most amazing sh*t I have listened to in ages!” Then came Paradise, or Born to Die – Paradise Edition. Again, amazing tracks. I was full and in love with the poetry, vocal stylings, controversy and audacity of an actual songwriter cooing about her life, love, her dreams and of course her flavored vagina! I wasn’t expecting her to release anything for a while and I resigned myself to that. Then West Coast came out all of a sudden and I bought it as soon as I saw it on iTunes.

West Coast touched me in a way none of her other tracks did before. The dual styled song within a song speaks to the sentiment of what the West Coast (California) represents to Americans but for me, it spoke to the West Coast of my little island and how I feel whenever I’m there – hopeful, ambitious, gifted, revered and almost worshipped. Life DOES get better, on the West Coast.

Ultraviolence as a title tickled me. I first saw it on her Instagram while trolling through my feed, I said “yaaaaaassssss bitch! Give it to me!” Upon regaining my composure I said I must get the album when it came out.

Hearing Ultraviolence was like hearing my unwritten journal entries being sung out loud by a voice that wasn’t mine. Here were my innermost thoughts and secrets being aired and reverberating through my bed from my subwoofer. I can relate to the album a little too much, more than even my closest friends will realize.

The toxic relationships, the unwavering love in the face of apathy, emotional retardation, indifference and general melancholy reminded me of my dedicated love, like St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, that still lives on to this day. A love that haunts, overwhelms and envelops.
F*cked My Way Up to the Top has replaced Cola in my mind’s default Tourette’s like song outburst. The gall of her! She is definitely controversial but it doesn’t feel deliberate. It’s simply honest and unapologetic (Hey Rihanna) and she makes real music about real life and real experiences. Some literal, some metaphorical, some lived and some witnessed.

The me of today feels about Lana Del Rey’s music like how the me of the 90s felt about Alanis Morissette. Having grown darker and more honest with myself and my pathology, Lana Del Rey is my new drug of choice.

And to the one person who won’t read this – Old Money is the song I dedicate to you, even if you change your mind I’ll come, come come.

Where is Rockstar101?

June 18, 2010

While looking through the Billboard Hot 100 checking to see how Shontelle’s highest rising single to date Impossible is doing this week,

I noticed that I hadn’t seen Rockstar 101 by Rihanna (ft. Slash).

Usually, before the video even comes out, the song is SOMEWHERE in the Hot 100 but with the video out a couple weeks now, I’m shocked that it’s no where to be found. At least I was at first.
Then I gave it some thought… the song which stuck out to me the first time I heard the album when it was released, and in my mind, this would have been a power single, especially the way in which I invisioned the music video. So when I heard this was going to be a single I was all excited thinking oh yay! Another potential number one single, then I saw the video and my jaw dropped.

That video looks like how a ghetto person imagines Rock music to be, as opposed to some artistic representation of being a Rockstar. Then when she suddenly dresses up like an Eastern European dominatrix, I gave up on the video altogether. Sad to say, worst video to date by Rihanna. Colour me disappointed.

Oh by the way- why are they putting her in blackface? Just a question.

And the Rumors Are In!

March 5, 2009

So apparently, this whole Chris Brown going Ike Turner on Rihanna (also known as Robyn F.) has led to some divulging of information!

It is reported that Chompers (Brown) may not be the straightest of individuals and the romance between the two of them (him and Rihanna) may be a cover for a secret life. Then again, given the reports of his movements in Trinidad, it may not be so secret.

A source levies allegations that Chris Brown is “a sister” and may be in love with some Trini guy. Also, he’s reported to have spent a great deal of his time in Trinidad with a drag queen.

This sheds a whole new light on the saga, I can only imagine that while pummeling Rihanna, Chompers was yelling, “You think you bad?! I does tek more man dan you! EH! EH! EH!”

Chris Brown Charged with Two Felonies.

March 5, 2009

Wow! All the rumors of reconcile may not be able to stop this snowstorm that’s afoot. According to CNN.com,

(CNN) — The argument that led to singer Chris Brown’s arrest on felony assault charges began when his girlfriend found a text message on his cell phone from “a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with,” according to a sworn police statement.

Chris Brown is charged with felony counts of assault and making criminal threats.

Chris Brown is charged with felony counts of assault and making criminal threats.

Authorities charged Brown on Thursday with felony counts of assault and making criminal threats, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

The charges are in connection with an alleged attack last month on “his girlfriend,” the office said.

It identified the woman only as Robyn F., but sources close to the couple have told CNN the alleged victim was singer Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty.

Brown was scheduled to appear in court later Thursday.

Rihanna, 21, was allegedly attacked by Brown on February 8 on a Los Angeles street before the two were to perform at the Grammys.

Brown apologized for the incident last month.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired,” the 19-year-old said in a statement released by his spokesman. “I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person.”

A search warrant used by police to obtain cell phone records related to the case included the sworn statement by Los Angeles Police Detective DeShon Andrews in which he detailed what allegedly happened in the early morning hours of February 8. Read the affidavit (PDF)

According to the statement:

“Brown was driving a vehicle with Robyn F. as the front passenger on an unknown street in Los Angeles. Robyn F. picked up Brown’s cellular phone and observed a three-page text message from a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with.

“A verbal argument ensued and Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. with his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.

“Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.’s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

“Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, ‘I’m going to beat the s–t out of you when we get home! You wait and see!'”

The detective said she then used her cell phone to call her personal assistant, Jennifer Rosales, who did not answer.

“Robyn F. pretended to talk to her and stated, ‘I’m on my way home. Make sure the police are there when I get there.’

“After Robyn F. faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, ‘You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I’m really going to kill you!’

“Brown resumed punching Robyn F. and she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in [an] attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown.

“Brown continued to punch Robyn F. on her left arm and hand, causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand.

“Robyn F. then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.

“Brown continued driving and Robyn F. observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand.

“Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle … and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.

“Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.’s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.

“She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown’s body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.

“Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.’s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order.”

Is Rihanna Pregnant?

March 3, 2009

So… this is interesting.

According to Celebtv.com via their Youtube account, Rihanna MAY indeed be preggers for Chris Brown and ‘friends’ are speculating that may have had something to do with the alleged assault that transpired last month that had everyone’s tongues wagging. Clip below:

Am I the only one that thinks this or did Miss Kelli Zink look like a permanently started  cheetah-human hybrid? I’m just saying it’s kind of distracting.

Oh back to the actual report. Um… abortions don’t cost that much, and she’s loaded. And now that I’m on the subject, I might as well air my prejudice. Why is it that the black couples ALWAYS have some drama surrounding them? It’s times like these I admire Denzel and Mrs. Washington and to a lesser extent Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Married, happy, settled, somewhat normal. No drama. Not that marriage is the great equalizer but I mean, they are a normal group of people.
And another thing, why is it ALWAYS domestic violence? Rihanna, Robin Givens, Tina Turner, even Halle Berry (to a lesser extent). It’s depressing.

Sigh.

Rihanna and Chris Brown Reconciled

February 28, 2009

I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around this one. So I woke up and on Facebook one of my contacts had up something about Rihanna in his status message.  So I followed the link to TMZ and was flabbergasted to read it.

Rihanna and Chris Brown — Back Together!

What is she thinking?!

The story just broke on People.com and TMZ has confirmed, the couple has reconciled and they are “together.” According to the report, the two are hanging at one of Diddy’s homes.

The L.A. County D.A. is expected to get the case from cops soon and then decide whether to charge Brown for the alleged beating earlier this month.

Battered Wife Syndrome. She is far too young and supposed to be surrounded by too many positive influences to be going down this road. It saddens me that she left Barbados, became a megastar, got her ass beaten alongside the road like some common whore and then goes back with the guy that burst her head. I hold my tongue no more. I have lost nearly all respect for both parties in this situation. Love isn’t abuse, beating, fighting or assault.

Nuff Said.

On Beyonce

February 24, 2009

Well more so on her overexposure. People have been suggesting that being too out there may actually hamper your success. Now, that having been said, Beyoncé Knowles, the QUEEN of overexposure decided that having Bidet and Bidet Unflushed wasn’t enough saturation, she decided to just release a two-disc album I Am… Insane. Don’t get me wrong, I love I Am… Sasha Fierce. I think it’s her best album to date.
However, when she releases two singles within a week of each other, I have to draw the line and say hold up, slow down girlfriend!
She wants to be THE entertainer. I am sure she goes home, looks at billboard and spits every time she sees Rihanna at number one, and that’s a lot of spitting to do, but I digress. So when I Am… In Need of a Sanitarium was released, she had out If I Were A Boy and Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) which I have parodied on my myspace :).
At any rate, both did exceptionally well on the Billboard Hot 100 and of course her album debuted at number one. However, the steam is now letting up and she has out two MORE singles, Halo (one of my favourite songs on the album)
beyonce_halo
and Diva (a female version of A Milli by Lil’ Wayne).

beyonce_diva

Both great songs, but… too much of a good thing is still TOO MUCH! After going through the Hot 100 and seeing that both songs had peaked, Diva at number 20 and Halo at 44 and were on their way down, I snickered and said HA! That never happened to her arch nemesis RiRi. She must have wiped her ASS with that when she saw her singles slipping further below Rihanna’s singles from last year :D
Long story short, B, take my advice. Before you release the last 8 singles you have planned before summer, hold off until at least the middle of April before bringing out a new single. Promote Diva in high end areas and Halo in the sweet heart states.
